Habichuelas Recipe

Habichulas or red beans, are one of the signature sides served with almost every Puerto Rican dish. It's a dish full of flavor, and love. It can be served simply with white rice, or served with a multitude of different dishes.

Ingredients

This recipe requires GOYA sofrito, olive oil, red beans, adobo, tomato sauce, water, chicken broth, GOYA sazon, garlic podwer, diced potatos, oregano, olives, and diced pumpkin

Preparation

  • In a medium sized suace pan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add 1/4 cup of chopped ham and saute for 2-3 minutes or until it starts to brown.
  • Add 1/4 cup of sofrito and 1 1/2 sazon to the pan and saute for 2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Add 1/4 of a cup of tomato sauce, oregano, and garlic powder, cook for 1 minute.
  • Pour in 2 cups of chicken broth, 2 cans of red beans with their liquids, 1/3 cup of potatos and pumpkin.
  • Cover the mixture and bring to a boil.
  • Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and cook for 30-40 minutes stirring occasionally.
  • Habichuelas and rice together make a meal most Puerto Ricans enjoy for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
